What is self-care and why it matters
Sometimes when women think of self-care they think of spa visits, manicures and pedicures, and expensive hair appointments. And while all these things can be a wonderful part of a self-care regiment, at Mountain Heart Wellness, I am focused on a different type of self-care.
As women we give a lot of ourselves. You may wear a lot of different hats; daughter, mother, wife, friend, co-worker. We ask a lot of our nervous system when we are often “on”. I hear women say, I have to be on all the time. Running the kids here to there, meeting the emotional and intimate needs in their marriage, the needs of their kids, being a good friend. The list goes on. It’s important to take good care of that nervous system so it can perform all the tasks we are asking it to. If we don’t take good care of the system, it starts to slowly breakdown. You may find you are exhausted more often, getting sick more often, experiencing aches and pains that you think must just be signs of aging. But oftentimes it’s our bodies yelling out for better care.
It might seem selfish or self indulgent to put yourself first, but the truth is, if you are going to wear all these hats, and wear them well, you must take care of you. Which means making you the top priority.
What I mean when I talk about self-care is what are the ways you are moving your body, eating, managing stress, sleeping, etc. Are you getting daily exercise, getting sunshine, breathing in mindful and meditative ways. How are you nourishing your body? Are you eating throughout the day or skipping meals and then binging when the hunger gets too much? Are you eating nutrient dense nourishing foods, or grabbing the quickest thing in the rush to just get by? These habits matter to your body and if you aren’t prioritizing yourself to make healthy choices, your body will eventually let you know, and let’s be honest, no one has time for that! So it’s important to make time for it on the front end.
Creating healthy routines and habits can be overwhelming. The best way to start is by making one or two small changes at a time in just one of these areas. This is what I help women achieve. If this is something you struggle with, it would be my honor and pleasure to start where you are, and walk with you toward a better, stronger, more resilient you that can show up strong and energized for all the things that matter to you. When you start by doing for you, you really are doing it for the ones you love, because they get a better version of you, and you get to feel better too.
